I have been watching over the last few months the number of companies soliciting for outside sales professionals to join their company. These companies seem to offer the world, but once you look deeper, the devil is in the details.

One large organization who sends lots of emails always boasts about how many sales reps are part of their organization. The way I look at it the more they add in your local market the more internal competition you have within your own company. Who benefits from the larger number or reps? The company does. They not only are taking about 9% of your gross sales but are also getting that monthly fee ($250-$500) from each one who joins. For what? Doesn’t your 9% you give them offset the costs for internal processing? Additionally, this same large distributor charges you for late payments by your clients. If they pay in longer than 30 days, you lose another 2 percent of the gross profit.

I’ve done some research on others who do a lot of email advertising for sales reps. Most charge you 100% for samples, 100% for self promo items, 100% of ASI’s ESP Online research service. This on the top of the 9% they take off the top of gross sales and the late payment fee.

But then you ask “How can I get charged for a late payment fee if I have already been paid a commission”? An easy answer, you don’t get paid until the house gets paid, then commission is calculated.

I never understood why very intelligent, hard working sales professionals have jumped to organizations that take so much and give so little.
